Baxi boilers
Baxi has been a fixture in British homes for decades, and the group now also owns Potterton and Main, so a large share of London properties run a Baxi-group boiler under one name or another. The Baxi range
Baxi is part of BDR Thermea, the European group that also owns Potterton, Main and the Heatrae Sadia cylinder brand. Current Baxi boilers carry series numbers such as 400, 600 and 800, with combis alongside system and heat-only models. In London the older installed base is the bigger story: Duo-tec, Platinum and EcoBlue combis from the 2000s and 2010s, and in older houses, Bermuda back boilers hidden in the fireplace behind a gas fire.

Servicing a Baxi
On a current Baxi the warranty usually depends on registration and a yearly service, so check your warranty terms. A back boiler is different: it shares the chimney with the gas fire in front of it, so the engineer checks the fire, the boiler and the chimney as one job, and the flue check matters most. A carbon monoxide alarm in that room is a sensible precaution.
Repair or replace?
On a Baxi combi from the last ten years, most faults are worth repairing. On Duo-tec and Platinum units it depends on what has failed: a fan or sensor, repair it; a heat exchanger or main board, get the replacement figure first. Replacing a back boiler is a bigger job than a normal swap. The boiler and usually the fire come out, and the new boiler goes elsewhere with its own flue and new pipework, so plan it for a warm month.

- My Baxi is over twenty years old. Can it still be repaired?
- Sometimes, and sometimes it should not be. The question is whether parts are still obtainable for the specific failure — some are, some are long gone. At that age we would look at it honestly and tell you if you are spending money on something with a year left in it.
- There is a boiler behind my gas fire. What is it?
- A back boiler, and a Baxi Bermuda is one of the most common. It heats the radiators and hot water cylinder, separately from the fire in front, and it can still be serviced, with the chimney checked too.
- Are Baxi, Potterton and Main the same boiler?
- Same group, not the same boiler. Each has its own model numbers, and the right part depends on exactly which one you have. The data badge on the boiler tells us.
- Do you repair and service Baxi boilers?
