What premises like yours need

What do pubs and bars need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?

  • Customer toilets that stand up to a busy night

Pub toilets take heavy, rough use in short bursts. Flush valves stick, cisterns get damaged, taps are left running and urinal traps block with debris. Customers notice tired, smelly toilets quickly, and one broken WC soon causes queues. Robust fittings help: vandal-resistant taps, concealed cisterns behind lockable panels, and urinals with a flush controller so the cistern does not keep cycling through the night when the pub is closed.

  • Glasswashers and bar sinks

Glasswashers run almost constantly during service and suffer in London's hard water, which leaves glasses cloudy and scales up heaters and spray arms. A softener or dedicated filter on the feed, a proper isolating valve and a waste that can take a fast discharge all help. Bar sinks, ice machine feeds and drip tray wastes also need to drain freely. Where we can, we fix leaks behind the bar without taking the counter apart.

  • Cellars that stay dry

Cellars collect water from cleaning, spills, condensation and sometimes groundwater. Many rely on a floor gully or a sump pump to lift water up to the drain, so a failed pump or blocked gully can flood the cellar within a shift. Non-return valves stop the drain backing up, and a high-level alarm warns you before water reaches stock or electrics. We keep to drainage and pumps; beer lines and cellar cooling are for your dispense technician.

  • Kitchens and heating

If you serve food, the kitchen needs the same care as any restaurant: a grease trap, hand-wash basins with hot and cold running water, and sound dishwasher connections. Old pubs often have awkward heating, with long pipe runs and radiators fighting draughty doors. Our Gas Safe engineers work on domestic-sized boilers. Larger commercial boilers and catering gas equipment need engineers with commercial gas qualifications, and we will tell you straight if yours is beyond what we do.

Planning a pub toilet refurbishment

Refurbishing pub toilets is usually best done in stages, so one set stays open while the other is worked on. Choose fittings that are easy to clean and hard to damage, and put cisterns and pipework behind access panels so later repairs do not mean breaking tiles. Check the extractor fan too, as poor ventilation causes much of the smell and condensation in pub toilets. Because our electricians work with our plumbers, the fan, lighting and hand dryers can be done in the same programme.

Keeping the cellar dry

Test your sump pump regularly by pouring water into the sump and checking that it starts, pumps out and switches off. Clear the gully grating of labels, broken glass and other debris, and do not leave cleaning water standing on the floor. If the drain backs up in heavy rain, a non-return valve may be missing or stuck. Consider a second pump or an alarm if the cellar has flooded before. We keep to drainage: we do not clean beer lines or work on cellar cooling.

Water safety in older buildings

Many pubs have letting rooms, staff flats or function rooms upstairs with outlets that go unused for weeks. Stagnant water in those pipes and in old storage tanks can let legionella bacteria grow, and the operator or landlord has a duty to manage that risk under HSE guidance (ACoP L8). We can do the plumbing side: removing dead legs, replacing old cold water tanks, reworking cylinders and fitting thermostatic mixing valves. Running little-used taps and showers each week also helps.

Questions

Questions about plumbing for pubs and bars

Can you refurbish our pub toilets without closing the pub?

Usually, yes. We plan the work in stages so one set of toilets stays in use, and we do the noisiest work before opening or after last orders. Where the water has to be turned off, we agree the time with you in advance. The price is agreed before work starts, and our workmanship is guaranteed.

Do you clean beer lines or work on cellar cooling?

No. Beer line cleaning and cellar cooling are specialist dispense and refrigeration work, usually handled by your brewery, pub company or a dispense technician. We look after everything around them: cellar drainage, gullies, sump pumps, water supplies, glasswasher feeds, electrics and heating. If we spot a problem with dispense equipment while we are there, we will let you know.

Our cellar floods in heavy rain. What can you do?

First we find out where the water is coming from. It may be the drain backing up, a failed sump pump, groundwater through the walls or a leaking pipe. A CCTV drain survey can show blockages or damage, and a non-return valve can stop water surging back from the sewer. We can also replace or add sump pumps and fit a high-level alarm.

Can you plumb in a new glasswasher or ice machine?

Yes. We fit the water feed with an isolating valve and suitable backflow protection, connect the waste so it drains freely, and add softening or filtration where your water is hard. If the new machine needs its own electrical supply, our registered electricians can install it on the same visit, so you are not waiting on a second trade.

Do you offer a 24/7 emergency callout for pubs?

Yes. We run a 24/7 emergency callout for problems such as burst pipes, flooding cellars, blocked toilets and loss of heating. There is a call-out charge, which we explain when you ring. Our engineers are DBS-checked and directly employed, carry identification and are fully insured. You can pay by card or cash.
