Pharmacy plumbing, heating and electrics in London
Pharmacy plumbing is mostly small fixtures, but each one matters. The dispensary sink is where measures, bottles and equipment are washed, the consultation-room basin is used before every vaccination, and one slow leak under a counter can ruin shelves of stock. Ninja Plumbers looks after independent and multiple pharmacies across London, Guildford and Woking: sinks, basins, water heaters, staff WCs, fridge circuits, heating and air conditioning. For a refit we work overnight or out of hours so the dispensary keeps running, and the price is agreed before we start. Because we also do electrics and cooling, one team covers the lot.

What do pharmacies need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?
-
A dispensary sink with hot and cold water
The GPhC standards for registered pharmacies expect premises to be suitable for the services you provide, and a clean dispensary sink with hot and cold running water is standard. It is used for washing measures, bottles and equipment, so it should be kept for that job and not double as the staff washing-up sink. We fit sinks with a good-quality mixer, a waste that does not gurgle or smell and a shut-off valve you can reach, sized to the bench you have.
-
Basins for clinical services
If you offer vaccinations, blood pressure checks, travel clinics or other clinical services, a hand-wash basin in or close to the consultation room is generally expected, so staff can wash hands between patients. Many consultation rooms were squeezed into a corner of the shop floor with no plumbing nearby. We can run feeds and a waste to a new basin, add a small point-of-use heater where hot water is far away, and fit lever or sensor taps. Check what your service agreements ask for before you plan the room.
-
Leaks kept away from stock
Pharmacies are packed tight, with stock shelved floor to ceiling and pipes hidden behind fixtures. A dripping joint behind a shelving unit or a failing water heater in a stock room can soak cartons for weeks before anyone notices. Water through the ceiling from a flat upstairs is another common cause. We trace and repair leaks, fit drip trays and accessible shut-off valves under water heaters, and replace tired heaters and flexible hoses before they give way.
-
Power and temperature for medicines
Medicine fridges are best on a supply that nobody can switch off by accident, such as a switchless socket or a clearly labelled one on its own circuit, so a cleaner does not unplug one to run a vacuum. Many medicines are labelled for storage below 25°C, and a dispensary with a sunny window, bright lighting and several computers can go well above that in summer. We install and maintain air conditioning for dispensaries and stock rooms, and repair heating for the colder months.
Planning a refit without stopping dispensing
Most refits move the dispensary sink, add a consultation room or both. Plan the plumbing early, because a sink moved to the other side of the shop needs a waste with enough fall, and that can decide where the counters go. We can run new pipework overnight or out of hours in stages, keeping the old sink in use until the new one is connected. Fridges can be moved onto new circuits one at a time, so medicines are never left without power. Bring us in at the same time as your shopfitter.
Protecting stock from water
Look at what sits above and around your stock. Water heaters, WC cisterns and pipe runs over shelving are the usual culprits, along with the flat or office upstairs. Know where your stopcock is and check that it turns, because a seized one turns a small leak into a flood. Keep the lowest shelf off the floor where you can. If your water meter keeps turning with every tap closed, a hidden leak is likely, and leak detection can find it without emptying the shop.
Keeping fridges and rooms in range
Your standard operating procedures will cover fridge temperature records, but the building has a part to play. A fridge plugged into a switched socket or a multi-way adaptor is easy to turn off by mistake, and one on a shared circuit can go off when another appliance trips the RCD. Ask us to put fridges on their own clearly labelled supply. For room temperature, keep a thermometer in the dispensary through summer; if readings creep up, cooling or better ventilation is worth looking at before stock is affected.

Questions about plumbing for pharmacies
Does a pharmacy need a sink with hot and cold water?
In practice, yes. The GPhC standards for registered pharmacies expect premises to be suitable for the services provided, and a clean dispensary sink with hot and cold running water is standard. Check the current standards and any inspection feedback for your own premises. We can fit a new sink, add hot water where there is none, or fix one that drains slowly.
Do we need a basin in the consultation room?
If you offer vaccinations, blood pressure checks or other clinical services, a hand-wash basin in or near the consultation room is generally expected for hand hygiene. Your service specifications may say more, so check them. Where there is no plumbing close by, we can run new feeds and a waste, and a small water heater can supply hot water on the spot.
Can you do our refit plumbing overnight?
Yes. We regularly work late, overnight or at weekends so dispensing is not interrupted. We phase the work so there is always a working sink and the fridges always have power, and we clear up before you open. If a shopfitter is running the refit, we are happy to work to their programme. The price is agreed before work starts.
Can you stop our medicine fridge being switched off by accident?
Our registered electricians can move the fridge onto a switchless fused connection or a clearly labelled socket that staff know to leave alone, ideally on a circuit it does not share with kettles and heaters. That makes an accidental switch-off or a nuisance trip less likely. Your fridge monitoring routine still matters, but the supply should not be the weak point.
Our dispensary gets too hot in summer. What can we do?
Many medicines are labelled for storage below 25°C, so a dispensary that runs warm is worth dealing with. Air conditioning is the usual answer, and our F-Gas certified engineers install and maintain it. We will look at the room, the heat from lighting and equipment and where an outdoor unit could go, then explain the options before quoting.
