Worth knowing first
A bit of this might save you from needing a callout at all — we'd rather you knew it upfront.
You cannot pump a combi boiler
A combi heats mains water on demand, and pumping the mains supply into a house is not permitted. If your shower runs off a combi and the pressure is poor, the answer is somewhere else entirely — the supply pipe, a partly closed valve, or a scaled shower head.
Positive or negative head is not a detail
Which type you need comes down to exactly how far above the shower outlet the cold tank is sitting. Get that wrong and the pump either refuses to start or never switches off — and it is the single most common reason a replacement pump packs in within a few months.
Pumps are noisy, so where it goes matters
A pump bolted to a joist under a bedroom will be heard through the whole house. On a solid base, on anti-vibration feet, with flexible hoses either side, it is a hum in an airing cupboard.
Air is what kills them
Most pumps that fail early have been running with air pulled in through the tank feed. Getting the feed right at installation matters more than the make of pump.
Common questions
Can I pump the shower in my flat?
Only if it is fed from a stored cold tank and a hot cylinder. If it is combi or mains-pressure unvented, no — and there is usually another way to improve it.
Why does my pump keep running after I turn the shower off?
Usually a passing valve or a dripping outlet keeping the flow switch active. Occasionally the pump itself. It is worth fixing quickly because running on is what burns them out.
How long should a shower pump last?
Think years rather than decades. How well it was installed matters more than how much you spent on it — the feed pipework, the mounting and getting the head type right do most of the work in deciding how long it survives.
Can you make an existing one quieter?
Often, yes. Anti-vibration mounts, flexible hoses and moving it off a resonant surface deal with most of it without replacing anything.
