What premises like yours need

What do dog groomers and pet businesses need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?

  • Baths and wash stations that drain properly

Raised grooming baths, often with a ramp or lift, and walk-in wash stations for large dogs each need a cold and hot feed, a mixer and hand shower, and a waste with enough fall to the drain. A raised bath usually has its outlet close to the floor, so the route to the nearest soil pipe matters. Where there is no fall, a pumped waste unit can lift the water. A walk-in station also needs a tiled floor that falls to a gully.

  • Dealing with dog hair in the waste

Dog hair is the main reason grooming wastes block. It knots with shampoo and conditioner residue into a mat that catches everything that follows. A basket strainer in the bath outlet stops most of it, and an accessible hair trap on the waste makes the rest easy to clear. Long runs of small-bore pipe with tight bends are the usual trouble spot. We can re-route or upsize a waste so it is easier to rod through.

  • Plenty of hot water at a safe temperature

A busy groomer can wash a dozen or more dogs a day, each needing several minutes of warm water, plus towels and cleaning down. A small combi or one instantaneous heater may not keep up with that. A cylinder with a good reheat rate, or a larger instantaneous heater on its own circuit, often suits better. Because you are washing an animal, a thermostatic mixing valve on the bath feed helps keep the water at a steady, comfortable temperature.

  • Power for dryers, blasters and laundry

High-velocity blasters and stand dryers draw a lot of current, and running two or three at once alongside a washing machine and tumble dryer can overload a circuit or trip the RCD. Sockets near a wet bath need careful placing and protection. Our electricians can check your consumer unit, add dedicated circuits for dryers and laundry, and fit sockets where you work rather than across a trip hazard of extension leads.

Before you buy a grooming bath

Check a few things before you order a bath or wash station. Measure the route from where it will sit to your nearest soil pipe or drain, and note whether the floor is solid concrete or suspended timber. Find out what size hot and cold connections the bath takes and whether it has an electric lift or pump that needs a socket or fused spur. Allow space to reach the waste trap. If you send us the spec sheet, we can tell you what the connections need.

Keeping hair out of your drains

Brush out and pre-strip coats before the bath where you can, because every handful caught on the table is one less in the waste. Empty the outlet strainer after each dog, not at the end of the day. Clear the hair trap at least weekly on a busy schedule. Avoid pouring hot water and chemical drain cleaner down a slow waste, as it rarely shifts a hair mat and can damage plastic fittings. If the bath drains slowly after cleaning the trap, the blockage is further down.

Water safety on a pet bath

A hand shower on a flexible hose can drop into a bath of dirty water, so the supply needs backflow protection suited to the risk, as the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require. A thermostatic mixing valve helps stop water arriving too hot for an animal's skin. If you rarely use a second bath or an outside hose, run it for a few minutes each week, because stagnant water can let bacteria grow. We can remove unused pipe runs and fit or replace mixing valves.

Questions

Questions about plumbing for dog groomers and pet businesses

Do you sell dog grooming baths?

No. We do not sell grooming equipment. If you have bought a bath or wash station, or are choosing one, we can fit it and connect the hot and cold feeds, waste and any electrics it needs. Send us the spec sheet before you order and we can tell you whether your space and drainage will suit it.

My grooming bath keeps blocking. Can you stop it happening?

We can clear the blockage and then look at why it keeps coming back. Often the waste is too small, has too many tight bends or has no hair trap you can get at. We can fit a basket strainer and an accessible trap, and re-route the pipe so it is easier to keep clear. The price is agreed before we start.

Can you fit a walk-in dog wash station in our unit?

Usually, yes. A walk-in station needs a waterproofed floor and walls, a floor that falls to a gully, hot and cold feeds with a mixer and a waste route to the drain. On a solid floor we may need to cut a channel for the waste. If there is no fall, a pumped waste can lift it. We will look first and explain the options.

Our hot water runs out by the afternoon. What are the options?

It depends on how many dogs you wash, what heats your water now and what electrical supply you have. A larger cylinder, a bigger instantaneous heater on its own circuit, or a mix of both are the usual answers. Our plumbers and electricians work together, so the heater and its circuit are one job, done on a day you are closed.

Do you work with pet shops and small vets as well?

Yes. Pet shops often need a sink for cleaning cages and bowls, a hand-wash basin and a sound drain. Small veterinary practices need clinical-style hand-wash basins, hot water and reliable electrics. Our engineers are DBS-checked, directly employed and fully insured, and we can work early, late or at weekends so animals and customers are not disturbed.
