What premises like yours need

What do salons and barbers need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?

  • Backwash units that work every wash

Most salon plumbing calls start at the backwash. Tilting basins crack at the pivot, mixer cartridges wear out from constant use, spray hoses split and the flexible connections behind the unit weep into the floor. When you refit or add a station, each unit needs isolating valves you can reach, a waste with enough fall, and a spray handset with backflow protection so dirty water can't be drawn back into the supply. We fit units you have already bought or help you choose one.

  • Waste pipes that cope with hair

Hair, colour, bleach residue and conditioner combine into a stubborn plug in traps and in the long, shallow waste runs that often connect a row of backwashes. Where basins sit in the middle of the floor, the waste may run under the floor or in boxing with barely any fall, or go to a small pump. We clear blockages, fit hair catchers and accessible traps, reroute runs with a proper fall and add rodding points so the next clearance is quicker.

  • Hot water for back-to-back washes

A salon uses hot water all day in short bursts, often with several basins running at once. An undersized combi or cylinder shows it first as lukewarm rinses at the busiest time. The choice is usually between instantaneous water heaters, electric or gas, which heat on demand but have a limited flow rate, and a cylinder that stores hot water for busy spells. We look at how many basins you run, your gas and electrical supply and the space available before suggesting either.

  • A comfortable, safe place to work

Clients sit still with wet hair, so a cold salon gets noticed. Radiators, heating controls and the boiler need to be reliable through winter, while in summer dryers and styling tools add heat that air conditioning can take away. Staff need a working WC and hand-wash basin, and dryers and tongs on overloaded sockets trip circuits. Because we also do electrics and air conditioning, a new water heater with its own circuit, or a cooling unit for the styling floor, is one team's job.

Keep hair out of the waste

Most backwash blockages build slowly, so the early signs are worth acting on: water pooling in the bowl, gurgling, or a smell from the plughole. Fit a hair catcher in every basin and empty it between clients rather than at the end of the day. Avoid tipping leftover colour, bleach or perm solution down the backwash, as residue sticks to hair and hardens in the trap. If several basins slow down at once, the problem is usually further along the shared waste. Clearing it before a busy weekend is far less disruptive than losing a basin on a Saturday.

Planning a refit or new layout

Moving backwashes is where refits most often run into trouble. Before you settle a layout, find out where the nearest soil stack or waste connection is and whether the floor can be lifted or the pipe boxed in. Island backwashes in the middle of the room may need a pump, which works but adds a little noise and upkeep. Leave access panels behind each unit so valves and traps can be reached. If you rent, get your landlord's consent for changes to drainage and the water supply. We can visit before your shopfitter finalises drawings, which saves moving a basin twice.

Choosing how to heat the water

Instantaneous heaters suit smaller salons and barbers with one or two basins: they don't run out, but each has a maximum flow, and a large electric model needs a suitable supply and its own circuit. For three or more basins used together, stored hot water usually copes better. An unvented cylinder gives mains-pressure hot water and must be installed by someone qualified to work on unvented systems; most manufacturers also expect an annual service. London water is hard, so limescale gradually cuts a heater's output. A softener or scale inhibitor is worth considering.

Questions

Questions about plumbing for salons and barbers

Can you move a backwash basin to another part of the salon?

Usually, yes. The deciding factor is the waste: it needs a route to a drain with enough fall, which may mean lifting the floor, boxing a pipe in, or fitting a small pump where gravity won't work. We check the route, the water supply and access before agreeing a price, and can do the work while you are closed.

Why does my backwash keep blocking?

Hair combined with conditioner and colour residue forms a dense plug, often in the trap or where a long waste run has too little fall. Clearing it fixes today's problem. If it keeps coming back, the pipework itself may need rerouting or a better trap fitting, and we will tell you if that is the case.

Will you fit a backwash unit I have already bought?

Yes. Send us the model and a photo of where it is going, and we will check the connections and waste it needs. Some units come with their own mixer and spray; others need a separate tap. We connect the supply with isolating valves, fit a trap you can get to and test for leaks before you use it.

Is an instantaneous water heater enough for my salon?

For one or two basins it can be. Each heater has a maximum flow at a given temperature, so two basins running together may get lukewarm water. Larger electric models also need a suitable electrical supply. We look at how many basins you use at once and your gas and electrics, then give you an honest recommendation.

Can you work when the salon is closed?

Yes. We can schedule work early, late, on your closed day or at weekends so you don't lose appointments. For a split hose or a flooded floor during opening hours, we offer a 24/7 emergency callout. Our engineers are directly employed and DBS-checked, and you can pay by card or cash.
