We refit staff washrooms, fit deep hand-wash sinks with proper hot water, clear drains, add outside taps and look after domestic-sized boilers. What premises like yours need

What do garages and workshops need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?

  • Welfare facilities for the team

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 require suitable toilets and washing facilities with hot and cold, or warm, running water, plus soap and a way to dry hands. In many garages the washroom is an afterthought at the back of the unit, with a tired cistern and a basin that only runs cold. We repair or refit staff toilets and washrooms, add extractor fans and lighting, and make sure the hot water actually reaches the tap.

  • Hand washing that shifts oil and grease

A small cloakroom basin is not much use when hands are covered in engine oil. A deep sink or trough with a lever or knee-operated tap, and plenty of warm water, makes cleaning up quicker and keeps grime off door handles. Hand cleaners and grease wash down with the water, so the waste needs to be sized for it and easy to clear. A point-of-use heater near the bays saves waiting for water from a distant boiler.

  • Heating the office and welfare areas

Most garages heat the office, reception and staff room with a domestic-sized gas boiler and radiators, or with electric heaters. Our Gas Safe engineers repair, service and replace domestic-sized boilers. Large warm-air heaters and radiant tube heaters in the workshop itself are commercial plant and need engineers with commercial gas qualifications, and we will tell you straight if your equipment is beyond what we do. We can also fit air conditioning in offices.

  • Electrics that keep the bays working

Workshops draw heavy loads from chargers, heaters, lifts and power tools, and old installations often have too few circuits and sockets in the wrong places. Our electricians add sockets and circuits, replace consumer units, upgrade lighting over the bays and carry out EICRs. If you sell or service electric vehicles, we can install EV charge points for the workshop and forecourt. Compressors, air lines and MOT equipment are for specialist suppliers.

Oil separators: what we do and do not do

Many garages have an oil interceptor, also called a separator, between the workshop floor drains and the sewer or surface water drain. It must be emptied by a licensed waste contractor, and the waste needs the right paperwork. We do not provide that service. What we can do is clear blockages in the ordinary drainage around it, repair gullies and pipework, and survey the drains by CCTV to show where problems are. Ask your waste contractor about the separator's condition and alarm.

Washing vehicles and using outside taps

If you wash vehicles on site, check where the water goes. Wash water with detergent, oil and road dirt should not go into a surface water drain, which often runs straight to a local river. Your water company or the Environment Agency can advise on what applies to you. An outside tap used with a hose needs backflow protection so dirty water cannot siphon back into the supply. Fit a frost-proof tap or insulate the pipe, and isolate it over winter.

Keeping the welfare area usable

Staff will put up with a lot in a busy workshop, but a broken toilet or no hot water soon becomes a real problem. Check the washroom each week for a running cistern, a dripping tap or a blocked basin. Keep oil, rags and hand-cleaner tubs out of the toilet. If the washroom needs refitting, consider wipe-clean wall panels, a robust WC, a deep basin and an extractor fan. We can plan the work around bookings and do it early or late.

Questions

Questions about plumbing for garages and workshops

Can you empty our oil interceptor?

No. An oil interceptor or separator must be emptied by a licensed waste contractor, who also provides the waste paperwork. We do not offer that service. We can clear blockages in the drains leading to and from it, repair gullies and pipes, and carry out a CCTV drain survey if you need to know the condition of the pipework.

Can you service the heaters in our workshop?

It depends on the heater. Our Gas Safe engineers work on domestic-sized boilers and appliances, which often heat the office and staff room. Large warm-air heaters and radiant tube heaters in the workshop are commercial plant and need engineers with commercial gas qualifications. Send us a photo of the data plate and we will tell you straight whether we can help.

What welfare facilities does a small garage need?

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 expect suitable toilets and washing facilities with hot and cold, or warm, running water, soap and a way to dry hands. The number depends on how many people work there. HSE guidance gives more detail. We can repair what you have, add a hand-wash sink by the bays or refit the washroom.

Can you install EV chargers at our garage?

Yes. Our registered electricians install EV charge points for workshops that sell, service or repair electric vehicles. We will check your supply and consumer unit first, as a charger adds a large load to an installation that may already be busy. If the board needs replacing or extra circuits are needed, we can do that as part of the same job.

Can you work while the garage is open?

Often, yes. We can work in the office or washroom while the bays carry on, and save jobs that need the water or power off for early mornings, evenings or weekends. The price is agreed before work starts, and our engineers are DBS-checked, directly employed and fully insured. For burst pipes or a total power loss, we run a 24/7 emergency callout.
