What premises like yours need

What do gyms and fitness studios need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?

  • Showers that stay hot and steady

A row of changing room showers used at once, straight after a class, puts heavy demand on both hot water and pressure. If the cylinder is too small or recovers slowly, the last few people get cold showers. Mixing valves wear, and push-button timed showers can stick on or off. We look at your storage, recovery, pump and pipe sizes, then suggest repairs or upgrades that suit how your members actually use the showers.

  • Drains that cope with hair, soap and heavy use

Hair, soap residue, body wash and grit build up quickly in shower traps and floor gullies, especially in shared wet areas. A slow drain means standing water, slippery floors and complaints at the front desk. Linear drains and wet room formers need to be laid to the right fall, or water spreads across the changing room. Regular trap cleaning helps, and when a drain keeps blocking, a camera survey can show whether the pipe itself is the problem.

  • Safe water in showers used unevenly

Some showers are used all day while others, often in a quieter changing room or an accessible cubicle, sit idle. Showers create a fine spray, so stagnant water in little-used outlets and dead legs is a legionella concern. The gym operator, or the landlord, has a duty to manage that risk under HSE guidance (ACoP L8). We handle the plumbing side: removing dead legs, reworking pipework and fitting or replacing thermostatic mixing valves.

  • Cool, well-ventilated training spaces

A studio full of people working hard gets hot and humid fast, which makes classes uncomfortable and adds to condensation on windows and walls. Changing rooms need good extraction to clear shower steam. Our F-Gas certified engineers size and fit air conditioning for studios and gym floors, and our electricians wire extract fans and new circuits. Heating in small units is often a domestic-sized boiler, which our Gas Safe engineers cover; larger commercial boilers need commercial gas engineers.

Sizing hot water for your busiest hour

Work out how many showers could run at once after your biggest class, then think about how long each person typically showers. That peak, rather than the daily total, decides how much hot water you need stored and how quickly it must recover. Keep stored water hot enough to control bacteria and use thermostatic mixing valves to bring it down to a safe showering temperature at the outlet. If your cylinder is struggling, a larger unit or a second one may be the answer.

Weekly checks for your team

Give staff a short weekly checklist. Run any shower that has not been used that week for a few minutes, pull hair out of shower and basin traps, and look for water pooling away from the drain. Report any shower that runs too hot, too cold or keeps dripping after it shuts off. Check under vanity units for leaks, and make sure the changing room extractor fans are actually running. Small faults found early are simpler to fix.

Planning a changing room refit

If your changing rooms need more than repairs, plan around the timetable. We can refit one changing room at a time, or work overnight and at weekends, so members always have somewhere to shower. Choose shower valves that are easy to isolate and service, slip-resistant floors laid to proper falls, and fittings built for heavy use. Think about accessible showers and WCs too. Because one team covers plumbing, electrics and ventilation, fans, lighting and water heaters are planned together.

Questions

Questions about plumbing for gyms and fitness studios

Why do our showers run cold after a busy class?

Usually the hot water system cannot meet peak demand. The cylinder may be too small, recover too slowly, or have a failing element or heat source. Worn thermostatic valves can also let in too much cold. We check storage, recovery, pipe sizes and valves, then explain the options before any work starts, with the price agreed first.

Can you install new changing room showers?

Yes. We fit new showers with thermostatic valves, timed or push-button controls where you want them, and wet room or tray bases laid to drain properly. We also handle the extract fans and electrics, since our registered electricians work alongside our plumbers. The work can be scheduled in stages so members always have somewhere to shower.

Can you help us manage legionella risk?

We can help with the plumbing side. The gym operator or landlord has a duty to manage legionella risk under HSE guidance, and the assessment itself should come from a competent specialist. We then do the work that often follows, such as removing dead legs, reworking little-used outlets, replacing cylinders or tanks, and fitting thermostatic mixing valves.

Our shower drains keep blocking. What can we do?

Start with regular trap cleaning, as hair and soap build up fast in a gym. If blockages keep coming back, the pipe may be too small, poorly laid or damaged. We clear the drain and can run a CCTV survey to see inside. Where the fall or layout is wrong, we can reroute the waste or fit a better drain.

Can you work outside our opening hours?

Yes. Many gyms open early and close late, so we can plan work for the quietest hours, overnight or at weekends. We agree timings in advance and keep noisy or disruptive work away from class times. For urgent problems such as a burst pipe or a flooding changing room, we run a 24/7 emergency callout.
