What premises like yours need

What do accountants and bookkeepers need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?

  • Somewhere tidy for clients to wait

Clients who come in to go through their figures or sign off a return will use the WC and probably accept a cup of tea. In a small practice there is often just one toilet and a galley kitchen shared by everyone. A running cistern, a loose seat or a sink that empties slowly is a small fault, but visitors notice it. We repair or replace WCs, basins, taps and kitchen sinks, and plumb in a new dishwasher or boiling water tap where you want one.

  • Hot water in a small kitchen

Offices above shops and in business centres often have no boiler of their own, so hot water comes from a compact under-sink or over-sink point-of-use heater. These are simple units, but the element or thermostat eventually fails, and scale from London's hard water shortens their life. We swap them like for like, or suggest a bigger unit if the kitchen now serves more people. If the replacement needs its own circuit, our electricians wire that on the same visit.

  • Comfortable through long hours

In January and at year end, staff may be at their desks from early morning well into the evening. Heating that switches off at five, a radiator that stays cold or a back room that bakes in July makes those weeks harder. We repair domestic-sized boilers and heating controls, bleed and balance radiators, and fit or service split air conditioning. Larger commercial boilers need engineers holding commercial gas qualifications, and if yours falls into that group we will tell you plainly.

  • Power for desks, screens and printers

A practice takes on a trainee, adds a second monitor, a scanner or a bigger multifunction printer, and suddenly extension leads run under every desk. Our registered electricians add sockets and dedicated circuits, check that your fuse board can handle the extra demand, and replace old boards where needed. Doing it properly also cuts the risk of a tripped circuit taking down the computers halfway through a busy afternoon of returns.

Book planned work around the tax calendar

Most practices are at full stretch in January, ahead of the 31 January self-assessment deadline, and again around the year ends that matter to their clients. That is the wrong time to have the kitchen out of action or an electrician drilling beside a colleague on the phone. Keep those weeks for urgent repairs only. Refitting a WC, replacing a water heater or adding circuits is easier to fit into late spring or summer, when the office is calmer. Tell us your busy dates and we will book around them.

Paper records and the risk of a leak

Even a practice that works mostly on screen usually keeps boxes of client records, signed engagement letters and old year-end files. Store them on shelves or in cabinets, not on the floor, and keep them out of the cupboard under the sink and away from the water heater. Look up as well: if a kitchen, WC or tank sits above your storage, a slow drip can go unseen for weeks. Find your stopcock and check it turns, so anyone in the office can shut off the water.

EICRs if you own or let your office

If you own your premises, or let part of the building to another business, it is sensible to have the electrics inspected at intervals. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 place a duty on employers to keep electrical systems safe, and a lease may make either the landlord or the tenant responsible for arranging an EICR. Read your lease and your insurer's terms to see who does what and how often. For a bookkeeper working from home, our electricians can inspect the domestic installation in a similar way.

Questions

Questions about plumbing for accountants and bookkeepers

When is the best time to book plumbing work in an accountancy practice?

Outside your busiest weeks. For most practices that means avoiding January, when the self-assessment deadline falls on 31 January, and the months around your clients' year ends. Late spring and summer are usually quieter for refits and new installations. Urgent faults can be fixed at any time, and we are happy to come before opening, after closing or on a Saturday.

Will I know the price before you start?

Yes. Our engineer looks at the job, explains what is needed and agrees the price with you before any work begins, so there are no surprises on the invoice. If something unexpected turns up once work is under way, we stop and talk it through before going further. You can pay by card or cash.

The water heater under our kitchen sink has stopped working. Can you replace it?

Yes. Small point-of-use heaters are common in offices without a boiler, and a failed element, thermostat or cut-out is often the cause. We check whether a repair makes sense or a replacement is better value. If the new unit needs a different electrical supply, our registered electricians can add the circuit on the same visit.

Do you work in home offices for sole practitioners and bookkeepers?

Yes. Many bookkeepers and sole practitioners work from a room at home, and we cover domestic plumbing, heating and electrics as well as business premises. Extra sockets for a desk and printer, a warmer study or a cloakroom WC for visiting clients are all jobs we take on, booked at a time that suits you.

Can you add sockets for new desks and printers?

Yes. Our registered electricians add sockets and dedicated circuits, first checking that your fuse board and existing wiring can safely take the extra load. That gets rid of daisy-chained extension leads under desks. If the same visit needs plumbing too, such as moving a kitchen sink, one team handles all of it.
