We fit child-friendly WCs and basins with thermostatic mixing valves, heat tall rooms evenly, add water points and fix leaks before they reach a sprung floor. What premises like yours need

What do dance schools need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?

  • Facilities for children and waiting parents

Classes for young children change over quickly, and within moments a whole group needs the WC and a basin. Lower pans and basins, or sturdy step stools at standard ones, help small children manage on their own. Where children use basins, a thermostatic mixing valve keeps the hot water at a safe temperature. Parents waiting through a class also need a WC, and somewhere to change a baby is useful. We fit, repair and adapt these fittings so the queue keeps moving.

  • Heating tall studios evenly

Dance studios are often big rooms with high ceilings, so warm air collects overhead while the floor stays cold. Radiators along one wall leave the far side chilly. Depending on the room, the answer may be more or larger radiators spread around the walls, warm-air heating, or underfloor heating laid under a new floor. Timing matters too: the heating needs to come on well before an early class so dancers are not warming up in a cold room. We look at the space before recommending anything.

  • Cooling, changing rooms and water points

A studio full of dancers heats up quickly, even in spring, and opening windows is not always possible. Our F-Gas certified engineers fit air conditioning sized to the room. Adult and vocational classes often need changing rooms, and sometimes a shower or two with steady hot water. Dancers also need to drink through class, so a water point in or near the studio is useful. We plumb these in, and our electricians handle any circuits they need.

  • Protecting sprung and vinyl floors

A sprung dance floor is a timber frame with a performance vinyl surface on top, and it does not cope well with water. A drip from a radiator valve, a pipe under the floor or a WC next door can soak into the subfloor unseen until boards swell or the vinyl lifts. Repairs mean lifting an expensive floor. Keep pipes out of the floor void where you can, fit valves you can reach, and act on damp patches early. We trace leaks with as little floor lifting as possible.

Working in a hired church or community hall

Many dance schools teach in halls they hire rather than own. The plumbing and heating there belong to the hall's committee, trustees or landlord, so any work needs their agreement first. If the WCs are poor or the heating runs on a timer you can't change, raise it with the committee and explain what your classes need. We are happy to deal with the committee directly, quote them for the work and carry it out on days when the hall is not booked.

Planning work around term and children

The quietest time for larger jobs is the school holidays, when most classes stop, or a weekday morning before after-school sessions begin. Book early for the summer, as many schools want work done in the same few weeks. Where children may be on site, our engineers are DBS-checked employees rather than subcontractors. Tell us your timetable and any rules about access, signing in and safeguarding, and we will plan the visit around them.

Keeping water off the dance floor

Know where your stopcock is and label it, so a teacher can turn the water off if a pipe bursts mid-class. Check radiator valves and the pipes beneath them for drips each term, and look at the ceiling if there are WCs or kitchens on the floor above. Keep water bottles and mop buckets off sprung floors. If you notice a soft spot, a musty smell or vinyl lifting at the edges, have it looked at before the damage spreads under the floor.

Questions

Questions about plumbing for dance schools

Can you fit child-height toilets and basins?

Yes. We fit lower WC pans and basins, or adapt existing ones and suggest sturdy step stools where a refit isn't practical. Where children use basins, we fit a thermostatic mixing valve so the hot water can't scald. We can do the work in the school holidays so classes carry on as normal.

Our studio never feels warm enough. Why?

High ceilings let warm air rise away from the dancers, and radiators on one wall leave the rest of the room cold. Undersized radiators, sludge in the system or a heating timer that starts too late all add to it. We look at the room and the system, then suggest options with the price agreed first.

We hire a church hall. Can you still help?

Yes. The hall's committee or landlord usually has to approve any work, so we can quote them directly, explain what is needed and agree a date when the hall is free. Small fixes, such as a WC that keeps running or a stiff radiator valve, are often simple to sort once they agree.

What happens if a pipe leaks under our sprung floor?

Turn the water off at the stopcock and stop using that area. We trace the leak with detection equipment first, so only the boards that need lifting are lifted. Once the pipe is repaired, the subfloor needs time to dry before the floor goes back down. For leaks that can't wait, we have a 24/7 emergency callout.

Are your engineers DBS-checked?

Yes. Our engineers are DBS-checked and directly employed, not subcontractors. Even so, most dance schools prefer work to happen when children are not in the building, so we usually book jobs for the holidays, weekends or before classes start. We follow your sign-in and safeguarding rules while on site.
