Grease traps and restaurant plumbing in London
A blocked kitchen drain at lunchtime or a coffee machine with no water can stop a café or restaurant in minutes. We carry out grease trap installation, clear and repair under-sink grease traps, fit hand-wash basins, plumb in dishwashers, glasswashers and coffee machines, and sort out hot water that cannot keep up with service. Our registered electricians work alongside our plumbers, so a new water heater and its circuit is one job. We can work before you open, after close or on your day off.

What do cafés and restaurants need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?
-
Keeping fats, oils and grease out of the drain
Fats, oils and grease (FOG) must not go down the drain, and Thames Water can take action against businesses whose waste causes blockages in the public sewer. Even with good scraping and wiping, washing up sends grease down the sink waste, where it cools, sets and narrows the pipe. A correctly sized grease trap under the pot wash sink catches much of it before it reaches your drains or the sewer.
-
Hand-wash basins where food is handled
Food businesses must provide enough hand-washing facilities with hot and cold running water, kept separate from the sinks used for washing food or equipment where needed. A basin placed behind a door or blocked by boxes does not get used. We fit dedicated hand-wash basins with lever or sensor taps close to prep areas, add a small water heater where hot water does not reach, and route the waste so it drains freely.
-
Dishwashers, glasswashers and coffee machines
Commercial dishwashers and glasswashers need a steady water feed, a waste that copes with a fast discharge and, in London's hard water, softening to stop scale building up on elements and spray arms. Espresso machines need a mains cold feed, an isolating valve, a filter cartridge and a drain point. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require backflow protection matched to the fluid risk, so each connection needs to be right, not just a quick tee.

Hot water that keeps up with service
A café can use most of its hot water in a short rush: washing up, hand washing and cleaning down all at once. An old cylinder with slow recovery, or one small instantaneous heater, runs cold just when you need it most. We look at your peak demand, your space and your electrical supply before suggesting a larger cylinder, extra point-of-use heaters or a mix of both. New heaters often need a dedicated circuit, which our electricians install.
Looking after your grease trap
A grease trap only works if it is emptied before it fills. How often depends on your menu and how many covers you serve, so start by checking it weekly and adjust from there. A full trap lets grease pass straight through and soon starts to smell. Keep a simple log of when it was cleaned and by whom. The collected waste should go to a licensed waste carrier, never the general bin or the drain. Large below-ground interceptors need a specialist tanker service.
Gas equipment and what we do not do
Our Gas Safe engineers work on domestic-sized boilers and appliances. Commercial catering gas equipment, such as ranges, fryers, chargrills and combi ovens, needs engineers with commercial catering gas qualifications, and so does the certificate for your kitchen's gas installation. We will tell you straight if something is beyond what we do. Everything around that equipment is fine for us: water feeds, drains, hand-wash basins, hot water, lighting, sockets and air conditioning in the dining room.
Planning work around service
Most kitchen jobs can be done without losing a service. A grease trap, a new hand-wash basin or a dishwasher feed can often be fitted early in the morning or after close. Before we arrive, clear the space under the sinks, show us where the stopcock is and tell us if an environmental health visit is due, so we can plan around it. If a drain blocks in the middle of service, we run a 24/7 emergency callout.

A larger or faster-recovering cylinder helps when hot water runs short during the lunch rush.
Questions about plumbing for cafés and restaurants
Does my café need a grease trap?
If you wash greasy pans, plates or trays, some form of grease control is sensible, and Thames Water can take action where grease from a business blocks the sewer. The right trap depends on your sink flow, your menu and the space available. We can look at your kitchen and suggest a trap that fits under the sink and suits your volume.
Do you offer grease trap cleaning in London?
We can clear blocked under-sink grease traps, check the baffles, lid seal and outlet, and help you set a sensible cleaning routine. The collected fat and food waste must go to a licensed waste carrier, and we will talk you through arranging that. Large below-ground interceptors need a specialist tanker service, which we do not provide.
Can you plumb in our coffee machine?
Yes. Coffee machine plumbing usually means a cold feed with an isolating valve, suitable backflow protection, a filter or softening cartridge and a drain connection. Many machines also need a dedicated electrical supply, which our electricians can install. Check your machine supplier's installation sheet first, as some warranties depend on a particular filter.
Can you work on our gas range or combi oven?
No. Commercial catering gas equipment such as ranges, fryers and combi ovens needs engineers with commercial catering gas qualifications, and we do not issue catering gas certificates. We will tell you straight when something is beyond what we do. We are happy to handle the water feeds, drains, electrics and hot water around that equipment.
How do we stop hot water running out during service?
Start by checking what heats your water and how big it is. A small cylinder or a single instantaneous heater may simply be undersized for your busiest hour. Fixing dripping taps and insulating long pipe runs helps a little, but the real answer is often a larger cylinder or an extra heater near the sinks. We look at demand and your electrical supply before advising.
