Where the charger can go
Most chargers go on an outside wall close to where you park, with a cable run back to the consumer unit. In London the first question is often whether you have off-street parking at all: a home charger must be on your own property, and a cable cannot be trailed across a public pavement.
Is your supply ready?
The survey checks the incoming supply, the main fuse, the consumer unit and the earthing, so we can tell you whether the charger can be fitted as things are or whether something needs upgrading first. Any upgrade is priced before work starts.
Smart chargers are the law
Home charge points installed in Great Britain have had to be smart since 2022, which means they can be scheduled and can respond to the electricity network. In practice that lets you charge on a cheaper overnight tariff if your supplier offers one.
Notifying the network operator
Charge point installations have to be notified to the local distribution network operator, which across London is UK Power Networks. We handle that as part of the job, along with the Building Regulations notification and your certificate.
What affects the price
A charger installation is priced after a survey or a look at your photos, and the price is agreed before any work starts.
The cable route
A charger on the outside wall right behind the consumer unit is a short run. A charger at the far side of a driveway, or a unit in a flat where the cable has to travel through the building, takes considerably more work.
The consumer unit
If there is a spare way and the unit is in good order, the charger circuit connects straight in. If not, the unit may need replacing or a separate one fitted for the charger.
The supply and earthing
Some homes need changes to the earthing arrangement for the charger, and occasionally the network operator needs to upgrade the incoming supply or main fuse before the charger can be connected.
The charger itself
Chargers vary in price with features such as a tethered cable, load management, solar compatibility and app control.

Common questions
Do I need off-street parking?
Yes, for a home charger. It has to be installed on your own property, and a cable cannot be trailed across a public pavement. If you park on the street, public or workplace chargers are the usual options.
Will I need a new consumer unit?
Sometimes. If there is no spare way for the charger circuit, or the existing unit is old, it may need replacing or supplementing. The survey tells you, and it is priced before any work starts.
Which charger should I choose?
Most modern home chargers do the job well. The main choices are a tethered or untethered cable, how it works with your app and tariff, and how it looks on the wall. We will talk you through the options before you decide.
Is a charger installation notifiable?
Yes. A charger needs a new dedicated circuit, which is notifiable under Part P. We notify it through our registration scheme, notify the network operator, and give you the certificates when it is done.
Can I charge from a normal three-pin socket?
Many cars come with a cable that can, but it is slow and puts a long, heavy load on a socket and circuit that were not designed for it. A dedicated charger on its own circuit is safer and much quicker.
Can you fit a charger at a block of flats?
Sometimes, where there is allocated parking and the freeholder or managing agent agrees. The cable route and the supply are the main questions, so send us the details and we will tell you what is involved.
