Plumbing for garden centres, nurseries and farm shops in London and Surrey
Garden centre plumbing is mostly about what happens outside: taps and standpipes across the sales areas and glasshouses, long supply pipes buried under hardstanding, and hoses that need the right backflow protection. Farm shops and pick-your-own sites add a café, customer toilets, food preparation areas and pipes exposed to frost every winter. Ninja Plumbers works for garden centres, plant nurseries, farm shops, pick-your-own sites and allotment societies across outer London and the Guildford and Woking side of Surrey. Our plumbers and electricians work as one team, and we plan visits around opening hours, deliveries and busy weekends.

What do garden centres and farm shops need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?
-
Watering points and backflow protection
Watering benches, washing down paths and filling cans all depend on outside taps and standpipes that get heavy daily use. Handles snap, washers wear and wall plates work loose when hoses are dragged across a sales area. Each outlet needs backflow protection suited to its use: a double check valve suits an ordinary garden tap, while a hose left in a water butt or a tank of plant feed is a higher risk and may need an air gap. We fit, move and replace taps with that in mind.
-
Long supply runs and hidden leaks
Many garden centres and farm shops are fed by one pipe running a long way across car parks, polytunnels or fields, often older blue plastic or even galvanised steel. A leak underground rarely shows at first. The usual signs are a water bill that jumps, a patch of ground that stays green or wet in dry weather, or pressure that falls away at the far end of the run. We trace the leak, repair or replace the damaged length and check whether the pipe size still suits the demand.
-
Frost and exposed pipework
Pipes to glasshouses, potting sheds, outdoor sales areas and field taps are the first to freeze in a cold snap, and a split often only shows when the thaw comes. We lag and box in vulnerable runs, fit insulated tap covers and add drain-down points so seasonal supplies can be emptied for winter. Where a pipe has to stay live and cannot be buried deeper, our electricians can fit trace heating to help stop it freezing, where it suits the pipe and location.
-
Cafés, toilets, shops and offices
Customers expect clean toilets and a working café, and staff need somewhere warm to wash. That means water heaters sized for the café and washrooms, hand-wash basins in food areas, and heating that keeps a shop or office usable in winter. Because we also do electrics, one team can add a water heater circuit, outdoor sockets or car park lighting. Commercial catering gas equipment needs engineers with commercial gas qualifications, and we will tell you straight if yours is beyond what we do.
Backflow: match the protection to the use
The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require backflow protection matched to the fluid risk at each outlet. A tap used for filling watering cans is a lower risk than a hose left lying in a pond display, a water butt or a tank with feed or chemicals in it. Hoses used around the site are generally treated as a higher-risk use, and some set-ups need an air gap rather than a simple check valve. If you are not sure what your outside taps have, we can check each outlet and tell you what we find.
Getting through winter
Frozen and split pipes are the most common winter problem on garden centre and farm shop sites. Before the first hard frost, lag exposed pipes to glasshouses and outbuildings, fit covers on outside taps and find your stopcocks so you can isolate a section quickly. Seasonal supplies, such as pick-your-own field taps or summer-only standpipes, are best drained down and left open until spring. Keep heating on low in shops, toilets and cafés overnight. Where a pipe cannot be drained or buried deeper, trace heating fitted by our electricians may help, where it suits the location.
Hand-washing in cafés and food areas
If you sell fresh food, run a café or offer tastings, food hygiene rules require adequate hand-washing facilities with hot and cold running water, kept separate from food sinks where needed. A basin tucked behind stock or without hot water is a common finding on inspections. Farm shop butchery or deli counters and pick-your-own weighing huts often need a basin added. We can plumb basins into kiosks, counters and outbuildings, fit a small water heater where there is no hot supply, and make sure the waste goes somewhere suitable.

Questions about plumbing for garden centres and farm shops
Do you work on garden centre and farm shop premises?
Yes. We repair and fit outside taps and standpipes, trace leaks on buried supply pipes, protect exposed pipes from frost and plumb cafés, customer toilets and staff washrooms. We can also sort outdoor sockets, car park lighting and heating in the shop or office. We plan visits around opening hours and deliveries where we can.
Can you fit an irrigation system for our nursery?
No, we do not design irrigation systems, and we do not work on boreholes, septic tanks or cesspits. What we can do is fit and move outside taps and standpipes, run a new supply to a glasshouse or potting shed, and add the right backflow protection so watering hoses cannot contaminate the mains.
Our water bill has shot up. Could it be a leak?
Quite possibly. On sites with long buried pipes, a leak can run for months unseen. Turn off every tap and watch the meter: if it still moves, water is escaping somewhere. Other clues are wet or unusually green patches and weak pressure at the far end. We can trace the leak and repair or replace the damaged length.
Why is the pressure so poor at our far glasshouse?
Usually the supply pipe is too small for the distance, has partly furred up, or is losing water through a leak along the way. Several taps running at once makes it worse. We can test pressure and flow at both ends, look for leaks, and advise on upsizing the run or splitting supplies so the far end gets enough water.
Do you cover Surrey as well as London?
Yes. We cover Greater London, including the outer boroughs where many garden centres and nurseries sit, plus Guildford, Woking and nearby Surrey and north-east Hampshire towns. Our engineers are directly employed and DBS-checked, the price is agreed before work starts, and there is a 24/7 emergency callout for burst pipes and floods.
