What premises like yours need

What do nurseries and childcare settings need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?

  • Toilets and basins at the right height

Children start using toilets and basins on their own early, so fittings need to suit their size: junior or low-level WCs, smaller pans, and basins set low enough to reach without a step. Nursery toilets are flushed dozens of times a day and see toys, too much paper and the odd wipe. We fit child-height sanitaryware, replace broken seats and flush mechanisms, clear blockages and rearrange toilet areas when rooms change use or age groups move.

  • Hot water that can't scald

Young children pull their hands away slowly and their skin burns quickly. Hot water at basins children use should be controlled by a thermostatic mixing valve, which blends hot and cold to a set, safer temperature and is designed to shut off if the cold supply fails. Stored hot water still has to be kept hot enough to control legionella, so the valve sits close to the tap. We fit new valves and replace old or faulty ones.

  • Nappy changing and laundry

A nappy-change area needs a hand-wash basin within reach so staff aren't walking across the room with dirty hands, and hot water that arrives quickly. Many settings also run a washing machine and dryer for bibs, flannels and spare clothes, plus a dishwasher in the kitchen or milk room. We plumb in basins, sinks and appliances, run supplies and wastes neatly to the nearest drain and fit isolating valves so one fault doesn't shut a whole room.

  • Warm rooms and outdoor play

Children spend much of the day on the floor, so even warmth matters more than in an office. Radiators too hot to touch are a concern in rooms used by toddlers, so low surface temperature radiators or guards are worth considering. A garden or play area often needs an outside tap for water play and cleaning, protected from frost and fitted with backflow protection. We handle heating repairs and upgrades, and our electricians can deal with wiring and fans in the same building.

Scald protection at the tap

The Early Years Foundation Stage framework expects settings to provide suitable toilets and hand-washing facilities, and you are responsible for keeping children safe around hot water. The usual protection at basins is a thermostatic mixing valve set to a lower outlet temperature. Guidance commonly points to around 43°C for basins used by young children, but follow your own risk assessment. Get into the habit of feeling the water at each basin children use, and report it if it seems hotter than usual. We can fit a new valve or replace one that has failed.

Common failures to watch for

Most nursery callouts come from a handful of problems. Toys, wipes and too much paper block toilets, so keep wipes in a lidded bin and help children use a little paper at a time. Cisterns in small WCs take rough handling, and a flush that keeps running wastes water and can hide a slow leak. Sticky taps and loose basins are worth reporting before they get worse. Walk round the toilets once a week and note anything that drips, rocks or keeps running, so small repairs can be done together in one visit.

Holidays, closures and legionella

Water that sits in pipes over a holiday or long weekend is a legionella risk. The setting, or its landlord, has a duty to manage that risk under HSE guidance, which includes dealing with little-used outlets. Before children come back, run each tap and shower for a few minutes, cold then hot. Unused basins and pipework left from old layouts are best removed rather than flushed forever, and we can cut out those dead legs. Holiday closures are also the best time for bigger jobs, such as a new toilet area or boiler replacement.

Questions

Questions about plumbing for nurseries and childcare settings

Can you fit child-height toilets and basins?

Yes. We fit junior and low-level WCs and small basins at a height children can reach, and can replace adult fittings in an existing toilet area. We check the waste and supply routes on a visit first, then agree a price. The work can be done during a holiday closure or outside session times.

Do you test or service thermostatic mixing valves?

No. Routine checks and servicing of these valves are not something we offer. We fit new thermostatic mixing valves and replace ones that have failed or reached the end of their life. If your own checks show a valve is no longer holding its temperature, get in touch and we can arrange a replacement at a time that suits the setting.

Why do our nursery toilets keep blocking?

It is usually toys, wipes or too much paper, sometimes all three. Wipes don't break down the way toilet paper does, including many sold as flushable. If blockages keep coming back after clearing, the problem may be further down the drain, and a camera survey will show whether the pipe is damaged or poorly laid.

Can the work be done when children are not there?

Yes. We can arrive before children come in, work in the evening or at weekends, or do larger jobs during holiday closures. Our engineers are DBS-checked and directly employed by us. If something urgent happens during the day, such as a leak or a toilet that won't stop running, we have a 24/7 emergency callout.

Can you fit an outside tap for water play?

Yes. We fit outside taps with a check valve so garden water can't be drawn back into the supply, and an isolating valve indoors so you can drain the tap before a freeze. A lockable handle or a removable key can stop children turning the tap on without an adult nearby.
