The whole house has lost power
Check whether your neighbours have power too. If the street is out, it is a power cut rather than a fault in your home: call 105, the free national power cut number, and they will tell you what is happening. If it is only your home, look at the consumer unit to see whether the main switch or an RCD has tripped.
A trip switch will not stay on
Switch off or unplug everything on that circuit and try it once more. If it holds, add things back one at a time to find the culprit. If it trips straight away with nothing connected, the fault is in the wiring. Leave it off and call us rather than forcing it back on.
You smell burning or see scorch marks
Stop using the socket or switch and, if you can reach the consumer unit safely, switch that circuit off. Do not touch anything that is hot, sparking or discoloured. If there is smoke or fire, get everyone out and call 999.
Water has reached the electrics
If the consumer unit and the floor in front of it are dry, switch off at the main switch. If they are wet, do not touch it and keep everyone out of the area. Then call. Because we are plumbers too, we can stop the leak and make the electrics safe on the same visit.
What affects the price
An emergency electrical visit is priced on what the electrician finds and what it takes to make the installation safe. You hear the price before work starts, whatever the hour.
Whether it really cannot wait
Work that genuinely cannot wait is charged at emergency rates. If the installation can be made safe and the repair can wait for a normal appointment, we will say so.
Making safe, or a full repair
Sometimes the right thing at night is to isolate the faulty circuit and restore power to the rest of the home, then come back with the right parts. Other faults can be repaired there and then.
How long the fault takes to trace
A tripped RCD with an obvious cause is quick. An intermittent fault that only appears when certain things are running takes methodical testing to pin down.
Water in the electrics
Where a leak has reached the wiring, the leak is stopped first and the affected circuits are isolated until they have dried out and been tested, which can mean a return visit.

Common questions
Do you really have electricians available at night?
Yes. Our emergency callout is available 24/7 for electrical faults as well as plumbing. Outside office hours the same number goes straight to whoever is on call.
How do I know if it is an emergency?
Treat it as one if there is a burning smell, scorching, sparking, water near the electrics, exposed wiring, or no power to heating, a fridge or medical equipment someone depends on. If a single light has stopped working, it can usually wait for a normal appointment.
Is it a power cut or a fault in my home?
If your neighbours are also without power, it is almost certainly a power cut: call 105 for updates. If only your home is affected, check the consumer unit for a tripped switch before calling us.
Will you fix it on the first visit?
The first priority is making it safe. Many faults are repaired there and then. Where a part is needed or the job is bigger, the electrician makes the installation safe, explains what is needed and agrees the price with you before carrying on.
Should I turn the power off at the main switch?
If there is a burning smell, sparking or water near the electrics, and the consumer unit and the floor in front of it are dry, yes. If only one circuit is affected, switching off that circuit alone keeps the rest of the house running.
Can I use the rest of the house while one circuit is off?
Usually, yes. Each circuit has its own breaker, so the others stay live. Just leave the faulty one off until it has been checked, and do not keep resetting it.
