What we do

Changing room refurbishment and plumbing for sports clubs in London

Ninja Plumbers handles changing room refurbishment, showers, hot water and drainage for football, rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis and bowls clubs, and for dance, martial arts and other small studios across London and nearby Surrey. We fit and repair team showers, size hot water for the post-match rush, clear drains clogged with mud and grass, and look after pavilions that sit empty for part of the year. What premises like yours need

What do sports clubs need from their plumbing, heating and electrics?

  • Team showers after the final whistle

After a match, two squads and the officials may all want a shower within the same half hour, and on a busy Saturday or a junior Sunday morning another game follows close behind. That peak, not the daily total, decides how much hot water you need stored and how fast it must recover. Undersized cylinders, tired immersion heaters and worn thermostatic valves all show up as cold showers for the last few in. We check storage, recovery, pipe sizes and pressure, then suggest changes that suit your fixture list.

  • Drains that cope with mud and grass

Boots, kit and players carry mud, grass, sand and grit into the changing room, and all of it heads for the shower gullies and floor drains. Standard shower traps block quickly, and a slow drain soon floods the floor. Outside boot-wash areas benefit from a silt trap that can be emptied, and shower areas from larger gullies or channel drains laid to proper falls. Where a drain keeps blocking, a camera survey shows whether the pipe itself is damaged, too small or badly laid.

  • Pavilions that sit empty for months

Cricket pavilions can be quiet all winter, and football and rugby clubhouses over the summer. Empty buildings suffer frozen and burst pipes, and water left standing in showers, tanks and cylinders is a legionella concern when the season restarts. The club, or its landlord, has a duty to manage that risk under HSE guidance (ACoP L8). We do the plumbing side: draining down and refilling, removing dead legs, fixing little-used outlets, cylinder and tank work, and fitting or replacing thermostatic mixing valves.

  • Kit laundry, outside taps and halls

Many clubs wash kit on site, which needs a heavy-duty washing machine with a proper supply and a waste that copes with mud and lint. Outside taps for boot cleaning and pitch-side water need backflow protection matched to the risk under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. Club halls and studios need heating that warms a big space quickly. Our Gas Safe engineers cover domestic-sized boilers; a larger commercial boiler needs engineers with commercial gas qualifications, and we will tell you straight.

Sizing hot water for match day

Count the showers that could run at once when both teams and the officials come in, then allow for any match that follows close behind. A cylinder that copes with one game may be empty by the second. Options include a larger or second cylinder, a faster heat source, or putting home and away changing rooms on separate supplies. Stored water should stay hot enough to control bacteria, with thermostatic mixing valves bringing it down to a safe temperature at the shower. Electric showers can suit a small studio, but rarely a full team changing room.

Closing and reopening a seasonal pavilion

Before the building shuts for the off-season, decide whether to keep a frost setting on the heating or have the water system drained down, and label the stopcock so any volunteer can find it. Isolate and drain outside taps. When the season restarts, flush every shower and tap before players use them, following the routine in your risk assessment, and check the cylinder reaches temperature. Keep a simple record of what was done and when. It helps the club show it is managing legionella risk, and it spots problems early.

Planning a changing room refurbishment

A changing room refurbishment is easiest in the off-season, or one room at a time so home and away teams still have somewhere to change. Choose robust thermostatic or timed shower valves that are easy to isolate, slip-resistant floors laid to proper falls, drains sized for mud and wall finishes that wipe clean. Think about officials' changing, accessible WCs and showers, and separate facilities for women's and junior teams. Because our plumbers work alongside registered electricians, extractor fans, lighting and water heater circuits are planned in the same job.

Questions

Questions about plumbing for sports clubs

Why do the showers run cold for the second match?

Usually the first group has used the stored hot water and the cylinder cannot reheat fast enough before the next group comes in. A failing immersion element, a worn thermostatic valve or a heat source that is too small can make it worse. We check storage, recovery and valves, then explain the options, with the price agreed before any work starts.

Can you refurbish our changing rooms in the off-season?

Yes, and the off-season is the best time for it. We strip out and refit showers, toilets, basins and drainage, lay slip-resistant floors to proper falls and fit easy-clean finishes. Our electricians handle extractor fans, lighting and shower or water heater circuits. If the work runs into the season, we can phase it room by room.

What should we do with the pavilion over winter?

Either keep a frost setting on the heating with pipes lagged, or have the water system drained down if the building will be empty for long spells. Drain outside taps either way. Before reopening, the system needs refilling and every outlet flushing. We lag pipes, fit frost thermostats and isolating valves, and drain down and refill systems.

Can you work around training and fixtures?

Yes. Send us your fixture list and training nights, and we will book work for days when the ground is quiet, early mornings or weekends outside match times. Studios can have work done between classes or before opening. For a burst pipe or flooded changing room, we run a 24/7 emergency callout.

Do you work with dance and martial arts studios?

Yes. Studios usually need a reliable WC, basin and sometimes a shower, often squeezed into a small unit. We fix leaks and blockages, fit compact water heaters or electric showers with the right circuit, and can add a macerator WC where the drain is awkward. Our F-Gas certified engineers can also fit air conditioning for hot summer classes.
