I turned the mains off and water is still coming. Why?
You almost certainly have a tank in the loft still emptying itself through the leak. There is usually a separate gate valve on the tank outlet — turning that off, and opening all the hot taps to drain it down, is what actually stops it.
Should I turn the boiler off as well as the water?
Yes, if the leak is anywhere on the heating or hot water side. On an older vented system the boiler can keep firing while the small tank that tops up the heating is cut off at the mains, and running it short of water risks damage. Turn it off at the switch or the programmer and leave it off. The engineer will refill and check the system before it runs again, rather than you guessing at the pressure.
